Safe Mode and Deadname Protection

Gender Journey includes privacy features designed specifically for the transgender community. Safe Mode and Deadname Protection give you control over what information is visible on screen and how your name is displayed.

Safe Mode

Safe Mode is a quick way to hide sensitive information from your screen. This is useful when someone might be looking over your shoulder, when you are in a public place, or when you simply want a layer of privacy.

What Safe Mode Hides

When Safe Mode is enabled, the following information is concealed:

  • Legal names (first and last).
  • Home address.
  • Sensitive health data and medical records.
  • Detailed hormone and blood test information.

The app remains fully functional — you can still navigate and use features, but sensitive details are replaced with placeholder text or hidden entirely.

Enabling Safe Mode

  1. Go to Settings and select Privacy & Safety.
  2. Toggle Safe Mode on.
  3. Safe Mode takes effect immediately across the entire app.

You can also add Safe Mode to your dashboard quick actions for one-tap access.

Deadname Protection

Deadname Protection ensures that your legal name (if it differs from your preferred name) is never displayed in the app interface. This is particularly important for users who have not yet legally changed their name but want to see only their chosen name throughout the platform.

How It Works

Gender Journey stores two separate name fields:

  • Legal name — Used only where legally required (e.g., GRC applications, official documents).
  • Preferred name — Displayed everywhere in the app: navigation, greetings, community features, and notifications.

When Deadname Protection is enabled:

  • Your preferred name replaces your legal name in all visible areas of the app.
  • GALE (the AI companion) will never use your legal name in conversations.
  • Community features only display your chosen display name.
  • Even in data exports, your preferred name takes precedence in user-facing fields.

Enabling Deadname Protection

  1. Go to Settings and select Privacy & Safety.
  2. Toggle Deadname Protection on.
  3. Ensure your preferred name is set in your profile.

Using Both Together

Safe Mode and Deadname Protection work independently and can be used together. With both enabled, your legal name is hidden (deadname protection) and additional sensitive information is concealed (safe mode), giving you the maximum level of on-screen privacy.

Tips

  • Set your preferred name first — Before enabling Deadname Protection, make sure your preferred name is filled in under your profile.
  • Use Safe Mode in public — Toggle it on quickly whenever you are using the app around others.
  • Review your profile — Check that your display name and preferred name are set correctly so that all community interactions use the right name.
